City and County Proclaim April 21, 2008 as CASA Day
In recognition of the occurrence and devastating effects of child abuse in our community, The El Paso County Board of Commissioners and Colorado Springs Mayor Lionel Rivera have proclaimed April 21, 2008 as “CASA Day.”
With approximately 10,000 reports of child abuse and neglect made to El Paso County’s Department of Human Services last year, child abuse and neglect is a community problem and finding solutions depends on involvement among people throughout El Paso County. Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of the Pikes Peak Region trains volunteers to be a voice in court for children who are victims of abuse, neglect, and severe domestic conflict and promotes community awareness of these issues.
“CASA is a valuable resource in El Paso County and we are grateful for their dedication and service to the community,” said Commissioner Sallie Clark. “All citizens should become more aware of the long lasting negative effects of child maltreatment and its prevention within the County and become involved in supporting CASA’s efforts to ensure that abused children receive advocacy and services that result in them living in safe, permanent homes,” said Clark.
The City of Colorado Springs also recognized CASA of the Pikes Peak Region with a proclamation of CASA Day. Mayor Lionel Rivera is calling upon all citizens to join in CASA’s efforts to prevent child abuse and asks for volunteers to be “a child’s voice in court.”
To generate awareness and support in the fight against child abuse, CASA is hosting the annual Light of Hope Breakfast on April 25 at the Antlers Hilton Hotel. Last year, nearly 900 supporters attended the event and donated $263,883 to help CASA serve local children.
The April 21 Board of County Commissioners meeting has been rescheduled for Thursday, April 24 at 9:00 a.m. Location: Pikes Peak Regional Development Center, 2880 International Circle.
