Resolution

WHEREAS, child abuse and neglect is a community problem and finding solutions depends on involvement among people throughout Colorado Springs; and

WHEREAS, Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of the Pikes Peak Region trains volunteers to be a voice in court for children who are victims of abuse, neglect, or severe domestic conflict, and promotes community awareness of these issues; and

WHEREAS, more than 10,000 children were reported as abused or neglected in El Paso County last year and hundreds are awaiting advocacy in the courts; and

WHEREAS, all citizens should become more aware of the long lasting negative effects of child maltreatment and its prevention within Colorado Springs, and become involved in supporting CASA’s efforts to ensure that abused children get out of the welfare and legal systems and into safe permanent homes; and

WHEREAS, citizens can partner with CASA to ensure that victims of child abuse have the opportunity to thrive; that we end the cycle of abuse and that these children grow up and become productive community citizens.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Lionel Rivera, Mayor of the City of Colorado Springs do hereby proclaim April 21st as

CASA Day
