Historic Preservation Alliance Tours CASA Building

The Historic Preservation Alliance of Colorado Springs toured the CASA building also known as the Maytag Aircraft Building on August 23rd.

The Maytag Aircraft Corporation building, designed by Jim Wallace, AIA of Lusk & Wallace Architects in 1957, was placed on the Colorado State Register of Historic Properties in 2006. The building is significant as an exceptional example of Modern architecture in Colorado Springs. Contributing features include its folded plate roof, cantilevered walls, recessed foundation (which makes it appear to be floating above the ground), and use of an exterior courtyard as an integral part of the building. The building is also historically significant for serving as the Maytag Aircraft Corporation’s headquarters from 1957 through 1982. The company specialized in providing aircraft refueling services to the military, and maintenance and servicing of executive aircraft and the manufacture of aircraft parts.

The tour was lead by Michael Collins, AIA from Michael Collins Architects. Roz Stouffer, CASA Operations Manager, worked diligently to get the Maytag Building on the State Register of Historic Properties, which was granted in December 2005. She is now working on getting the building listed on the National Register of Historic Properties.

The building is a stop on the City of Colorado Springs historic downtown walking tour. For more information go to:
