CASA Building added to Historic Register

Aeronautic Design Lands Local Building on Historic Register

Maytag Aircraft Building worth preserving for future generations a CASA preservation gift to our community

(Colorado Springs, Colorado) – Visit the Maytag Aircraft building in Colorado Springs and let your imagination take flight. That’s what architect Jim Wallace did when he designed the building located on the corner of South Cascade and Rio Grande. Constructed in 1957 for the Maytag Aircraft Company, the building was recently listed in the Colorado State Register of Historic Properties as “an important example of Modernism in Colorado Springs.” The American Institute of Architecture named the building one of the top 20 greatest structures in the region.

Founded in 1948 by Lewis B. Maytag, the company maintained and repaired aircraft, manufactured parts and provided refueling services to the military. “Reflective of wings,” is one phrase that Wallace himself used to describe the building. Exposed aluminum roof trusses, cantilevered walls and a blue-glazed brick exterior are among the many characteristics that distinguish the Maytag Aircraft building from other post-war era office buildings.

Constructed without columns, the interior is spacious, airy and brightly illuminated. Large angular windows provide ample natural light. Strategically placed fluorescent fixtures emulate runway lighting.

Local admirers have described the Maytag Aircraft building as “a form-meets-function design” and “a beautifully proportioned building.” The building is that and much more – an architectural gem to be preserved, admired and enjoyed for generations to come.

The Maytag Aircraft building is currently occupied by CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates). A nonprofit, volunteer-based organization, CASA provides “a child’s voice in court,” for children who are the victims of abuse, neglect or volatile domestic conflict. CASA purchased the historic building at 701 South Cascade in 2002 with funds raised from a $1.5 million capital campaign. For more information, phone (719) 447-9898.
