CASA Welcomes New Members to the Board of Directors - July, 2007

CASA of the Pikes Peak Region has added four new members to the Board of Directors: Wayne Bland, Vice President, Rocky Mountain Bank & Trust; Stuart Scott, President, Stuart Scott, Ltd.; and Martin Thrasher, Attorney at Law.

Catherine Coulter Calvin, a CASA board member since 2005, took over for Nancy Henjum as Board Chair on July 1, 2007.

WAYNE BLAND
Vice President

Wayne grew up in Oklahoma and attended Oklahoma State University. He holds a B.S. degree in Business and Marketing from OSU’s College of Agriculture. Wayne moved to Colorado Springs in January, 1999 and is currently the vice president of Rocky Mountain Bank & Trust. Wayne is committed to community service and has shared his time and talent with many agencies including: Stillwater Board of Realtors, Stillwater Chamber of Commerce, Stillwater Frontier Rotary Club, Community Action, Inc., Payne County CASA, Stillwater Public Library Fundraising Development Committee, Colorado Springs Downtown Rotary Club, Colorado Mortgage Lenders Association, and Pikes Peak Community Action Agency.

STUART SCOTT

Stuart started his life in Honduras and moved to Colorado in 1956. He attended college at Colorado State University before serving in the Army as a Captain. Stuart and his wife, Susie, came to Colorado Springs in 1972. Since then he has developed real estate, sold commercial properties and land, served as a receiver for lenders, converted apartment houses to condominiums, and owned his own advertising agency. Currently, he is a working broker and serves as President of Stuart Scott Ltd., a boutique real estate brokerage firm. Stuart is passionate about residential real estate, working with families and their housing needs. He has served on many boards in our community including American Heart Association and Renaissance Academy.

MARTIN THRASHER

J. Martin Thrasher, Attorney At Law

Early in his law career Martin was a prosecutor in the Colorado Springs Municipal Court. The focus of his career shifted in the 1980’s to the environmental field where he helped to develop health and safety programs for the City of Colorado Springs and Colorado Springs Utilities. As a Department Director, he was also a member of the executive team responsible for developing vision, strategies and direction. Having worked for a local government agency, Martin has extensive experience not only in technical subject matters in the environmental, health and safety field, but also in administrative and personnel matters. He retired from the City of Colorado Springs in 1999 and has since provided general legal counsel for the El Paso County Health department; presided as an Administrative Hearing Officer for the Colorado Springs Utilities for customer disputes; and, instructed for the U.S. Department of Interior and for the University of Colorado in hazardous materials management. Since January 2004, he has been the only Municipal Judge for the City of Manitou Springs. Martin has been active in the community as Chairman, Barr Camp, Inc.; President of the Friends of Beidleman Enviornmental Center, and past-President of the Pikes Peak Dystonia Support Group. He has also sponsored foreign exchange students.

TAFARI LUMUMBA

Tafari grew up in Denver and attended Colorado College where he majored in English. While in college, he interned at the El Paso County District Attorney’s Office and also attained a longtime goal of learning Spanish after studying abroad in Oaxaca, Mexico. Tafari graduated cum laude from Colorado College and won the Thomas J. Watson Fellowship in 2005. Through this project, he volunteered with small Mayan non-governmental organizations in Guatemala. Currently, his work with El Pomar Foundation has exposed him to an array of nonprofits through the Empty Stocking Fund and site visits which are conducted with all grant recipients. Through this fellowship he has received a greater understanding of service-based nonprofits and how foundations fill important needs. Tafari has had previous work experience with nonprofits at the volunteer, service, and foundation level. In high school and college he volunteered with the Clayton Neighborhood Association in Denver as a youth coordinator and served on the English Department Student Advisory Board and the President’s Diversity Task Force at Colorado College. In the fall of 2008, he plans to attend law school and focus on criminal and juvenile law.

CATHERINE COULTER CALVIN, CHAIR

Catherine started Total Performance Solutions, a consulting firm that specializes in human resource development and organizational development. Prior to establishing her own business, she worked for global companies for 18 years in various human resource roles which led her to travel throughout the U.S., Europe, and Asia. She is the member of the DS Performance Group and periodically travels internationally to speak on how to achieve high performance utilizing a performance equation she co-developed. She has been involved with Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Colorado Springs Community Conversations on Race, and the Pikes Peak Human Relations Coalition. Catherine chaired CASA’s Light of Hope Committee in 2007 and is currently a volunteer in the Supervised Exchanged and Parenting Time Program. She is married with two step-sons in their 20's and a 3-year-old daughter adopted from China.
