Domestic Relations Advocacy

The CASA Domestic Relations Program addresses the needs of children involved in conflictive domestic relations (custody) disputes. A judge or magistrate appoints CASA for fact-finding on domestic relations, probate or paternity cases. The CASA volunteer is appointed to the case after completion of the core initial advocacy training that covers such issues as parenting time schedules, emotional abuse, domestic violence and parental alienation. The CASA’s responsibilities include but may not be limited to:

• Meet with all parties concerned
• Facilitate parenting time
• Ensure expedient attention to a child’s needs
• Research and investigate all aspects of the child’s life
• Direct child and family members to appropriate community resources
• Monitor family compliance with court orders
• Participate in hearings and other meetings that have important information
• Communicate to the court through written and verbal reports
• Make recommendations to the court through written and verbal reports

Stats for Domestic Relations Program Fiscal Year 2009-2010

  • Children Served = 125

  • The DR Program closed cases on 91 children.
  • The DR Program opened cases on 85 children
  • 91% of the children on those cases benefited due to CASA Advocate's recommendations ordered by the Court of CASA Advocates assisting parents in reaching parenting time agreements for the children’s best interest.
  • 67% of domestic relations cases were completed within 6 months.
