Roy Fulcher
Zachary was only a baby when he entered the child welfare system. His dad was abusive and his mom was struggling with addiction. Roy Fulcher was Zachary’s Court Appointed Special Advocate. “I have always stuck up for the underdog and now I stood up for Zach to make sure his best interests were always front and center,” said Roy.
Zachary’s mom had ups and downs but Roy knew she could turn her life around. With time and support, she was able to get & stay sober, and she became a responsible, loving parent to her son. Thanks to Roy’s consistent presence and commitment to Zach, he is back home…happy and safe and with a bright future ahead.
Taylor Moore
Volunteering is my first way of giving back to those who helped save me. When I heard of the Supervised Exchange and Parenting Time (SEPT) program, I knew what an impact it could have on children. I wanted to be a part of something that could help children rebuild and maintain relationships with their non-custodial parents. Vanessa Shawver
CASA volunteer Vanessa Shawver is working with a teen girl who has had a rough go in life to this point. Vanessa is using her love of running to connect with this young lady and to inspire her to believe in herself and succeed in spite of her painful past.
"In bringing her into my running world ever so briefly, I was able to show her the best of a community she had never witnessed," says Vanessa. "I showed her how shared experiences can bring people together rather than tear them apart. She saw the camaraderie along the course and heard people cheering for her that she’d never even seen before that day. She saw the good in people, which contrasted sharply with what she’s seen so far as a child. When the crowd went wild at her last sprint, I actually caught a large smile. I can say that in the moments when she thought she couldn’t go any further – not because of physical ability but rather lack of mental fortitude – it was rewarding to be there to encourage her and sprint alongside her eventual push to the finish." Kathleen Gamblin
After retiring from her career as a school nurse and counselor, Kathleen Gamblin started volunteering with CASA of the Pikes Peak Region to carry on her service to children. CASA was a good fit for the skills she had mastered working with high school students in the community. This is Kathleen’s 17th year as a Court Appointed Special Advocate, she is also a former board member and has recently taken on an even deeper role as a volunteer Peer Coordinator. Carlos Sanabria
Young Brianna had a rough start in life due to meth-addicted parents who failed to care for her properly. She was placed in foster care in 2012 at the age of five. Thanks to the consistent presence and dedication of CASA volunteer Carlos Sanabria, Brianna was adopted into her forever home with loving parents Joel and Christina. Judge Kennedy presided over the adoption ceremony and invited Brianna to sit on the bench and give the gavel a bang to make it official.
